On July 25th, the onion market in Maharashtra had prices ranging from USD 0.024-0.13/kg (INR 2-11/kg), depending on size, moisture content, color, and overall quality. Onions with better qualities fetched higher rates of USD 0.097-0.16/kg (INR 8-13/kg). However, exports of onions to Bangladesh have declined from 250-300 trucks per day to 50-70 trucks daily. Consequently, mid-quality produce is being redirected to other markets within India.

On the other hand, the onion market in Delhi encountered difficulties as 46 out of 115 trucks consisted of old arrivals with mid to low-quality onions on July 25th. Climate-related issues and high moisture levels led to a decline in onion quality, resulting in a wastage of 1-2 kg per bag in certain cases. However, good quality onions with larger sizes and low moisture stood at higher prices, ranging from USD 8.51-9.72/40kg (INR 700-800/40kg). In contrast, the overall market price for good quality onions from Maharashtra was approximately USD 0.17-0.18/kg (INR 14-15/kg).

In summary, the onion markets in Maharashtra and Delhi had different situations in W30. Maharashtra offered a diverse price range depending on onion quality, while Delhi faced challenges with older stocks and quality problems. Despite this, there was strong demand for good quality onions in both regions, providing opportunities for farmers and traders. Ensuring high-quality onions and addressing moisture issues will be crucial for a successful onion market in both areas.
