India's pigeon pea cultivation area decreased by 21.7% from an average of 600,000ha per year over the last four years to 470,000ha in 2022. Farmers are replacing pigeon peas with short-term crops since pigeon peas have a six-month planting duration compared to crops like soya bean, moong, and urad, which only have a planting period of three to four months. With short-term crops, farmers can produce a second crop like sorghum during the rabi season. Rabi crops are grown in winter from October to December and harvested in summer from April to June, similar to wheat, barley, and mustard.
