On September 1, 2023, in the Delhi Wholesale Market for onions, there were 100 old stock trucks. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) had seven trucks, while the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) had 15 trucks. The Nashik market stood at USD 0.24 to 0.30/kg (INR 20 to 25/kg) for mid-quality and USD 0.33 to 0.35/kg (INR 27 to 29/kg) for good quality and big size. Madhya Pradesh (MP) priced onions at USD 0.24 to 0.28/kg (INR 20 to 23/kg) for mid-quality, and USD 0.30 to 0.33/kg (INR 25 to 27/kg) for good quality and big sizes. Onions in Rajasthan stood at USD 0.18 to 0.30/kg (INR 15 to 25/kg), depending on size, color and quality.
NAFED is priced at USD 0.25 to 0.28/kg (INR 21 to 23/kg), and NCCF is priced at USD 0.25 to 0.27/kg (INR 21 to 22/kg).
In Mumbai, the wholesale onion prices varied, with the average market price at USD 18.74/quintal (INR 1,550/quintal), USD 0.17 to 0.19/kg (INR 14 to 15.50/kg) for mid-size and mid-quality. Mid-low quality and small-size onions stood at USD 10.88/quintal (INR 900/quintal), USD 0.11 to 0.13/kg (INR 9 to 11/kg). The maximum price of good quality and big-size onions stood at USD 26.59/quintal (INR 2,200/quintal) and USD 0.24 to 0.28/kg (INR 20 to 23/kg).
The arrival of the new crop and the availability of vibrant red onions in Maharashtra might face a slight delay this year. Traders view the government's decision to impose export duties on onions as a cautious move to control price fluctuations. In recent years, onion prices from October to November often surged, impacting the people of India significantly.
