Mustard seed production was estimated at 109.5 lakh MT in 2021-22. The area under coverage has been pegged at 87.44 lakh hectares, while the average yield is seen at 1,270 kg per hectare. The likely rise in mustard seeds production would result in higher mustard oil output, adding that the country's overall edible oils import may come down. Mustard seeds are grown only in rabi season, and the sowing starts in October, while harvesting begins in March. Mustard is an important cash crop for farmers in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan is the largest producer expected to increase to 49.50 lakh MT during the rabi season of 2021-22 as against 35 lakh MT in the previous year.
