Rainy Season and Pineapple Translucency

The perennial issue of translucency in Philippine Pineapples occurred again during week 12. This is the result of the long wet season in areas where Pineapples are grown. Translucency is a physiological disorder of the pineapple flesh. The affected flesh has low porosity and a water-soaked appearance, due to the inter-cellular free spaces being filled with liquid (Sideris and Krauss, 1933).
With this kind of defect, the de-greened pineapples are harvested with low color to minimize loss. Low color is favorable for ME markets; the Japanese & Korean market requires a higher color stage at harvest.
