For many years South Australia claimed the title of being the only mainland state free of the fruit fly. However, from December 2019 they started to suffer from the first outbreak.

Lately, there has been a slight spread of the pest in the Riverland region, one of the main areas for growing navel oranges in wintertime within Australia.

Extensive eradication efforts are currently underway by authorities, who are confident the outbreaks will eventually be brought under control.
