In 2024, the Spanish fishing fleet will see a significant increase in quotas for cod and hake in the 3M zone, specifically on the Flemish Cap plateau, which has been closed for many years. There will be a 92% rise in the cod quota and a 57% increase in the hake quota. Fishing opportunities for other key species such as black halibut, shrimp, skate, and burbot will remain stable.

Spain, in collaboration with Portugal, holds the highest cod quota among European Union member states and has been actively involved in the restoration of the cod population in the Northwest Atlantic for several decades.

The allocation of quotas is conducted among freezer trawler fleets and cod fishing vessels in accordance with their respective management plans, regulated by the Ministerial Order of December 21, 1999, governing Spanish fishing activities in the Northwestern Atlantic zone.

Annually, Spanish quotas within the NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization) are disclosed through community regulations, establishing fishing opportunities in EU waters and, for EU vessels, in certain non-EU waters for specific fish populations and groups.
