The Government of Aragon extends the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Calatayud to the municipalities of Daroca, Murero, Villafeliche, Orcajo, and Manchones, which means increasing 170 hectares. Now it is the wineries that are located in the expanded areas (Sommos Garnacha and the Cooperativa Santo Tomás de Aquino de Daroca, among others) that must request their registration and certification from the regulatory council in order to use the brand and be able to market their wines as DOP Calatayud.
The 170 hectares of the extension belong to 130 winegrowers who will contribute nearly half a million kg of grapes. 116 hectares are of red Grenache, 41 of Macabeo, 6 of Tempranillo and the rest of different varieties. The red varieties represent 93 % of the total in the Calatayud PDO, garnacha being the most represented, followed by tempranillo and syrah.
