Uganda’s Coffee Industry Faces Challenges with Reforms Needed to Ensure Stability and Growth

Coffee is the most exported crop in Uganda, which contributes more than 25% of the country's GDP. However, the industry is now facing numerous challenges, including the effects of climate change in various growing areas in the form of prolonged drought in the last two seasons. Meanwhile, there were attempts by key players to monopolise the Ugandan coffee sector. Reforms such as privatisation of the coffee sector and strengthening farmer cooperatives could avoid exploitation from private companies.
