Asparagus market in Europe - frost damage, high prices, delays in the start of the season

EastFruit analysts note that this year the European asparagus market will suffer record losses in terms of production volumes. At the same time, these losses may be offset by higher prices for this vegetable. The main feature of the 2021 season is the delay in the ripening of asparagus by one and a half to two weeks in almost all European countries - from Belgium and the Netherlands to Georgia. Even in southern Europe, the season started later than usual. Another distinguishing feature is the frost damage that most countries have experienced. Even in Italy, asparagus farmers have faced losses. Asparagus growers in Poland, Germany, Ukraine and even Great Britain had similar problems. Another interesting point is the high price level. Last year Europe saw critically low prices for asparagus. In Italy, the retail price then fell below 3 euros per kg, and farmers received no more than 1.5 euros per kg at all.
