
In Jan-24, Peru saw a significant increase in its fresh lemon exports, reaching 5.5 thousand tons valued at USD 6 million. This marks a 21% year-over-year (YoY) increase in volume and a 37% YoY increase in value. The average price of Peruvian lemons increased to USD 1.16 per kilogram (kg), an increase of 13% YoY.
California's District One is improving lemon supply, with larger fruit being the main focus. However, crops from District Two are expected to contribute significantly, especially leading into the Easter holidays, ensuring an abundant supply of lemons throughout Mar-24 and Apr-24. Rainfall is a primary factor influencing lemon sizing during the bloom season in 2024. California currently supplies the majority of lemons in the United States (US), with District One accounting for 80% and District Two providing the rest. Mexico, Argentina, and Chile are expected to contribute in August and September, ensuring a steady supply throughout the rest of 2024.
Ramadan in Bangladesh has led to a significant increase in lemon prices, with farmers selling at USD 7.30 to 8.21 per 100 lemons (BDT 800 to 900/100 lemons), compared to the USD 0.91 to 1.82/100 lemons (BDT 100 to 200/100 lemons) price range during peak season. Despite the primary months being May, June, and July, year-round production is undertaken to meet off-season demand, resulting in prices soaring to USD 0.55 to 0.73 for four lemons (BDT 60 to 80 for four lemons) in Dhaka. Lemon production reached 237 thousand tons in the fiscal year 2022/23, up from 207 thousand tons the previous year.
