The first forecasts by Agreste, made on July 1, predict a soft wheat production of 29.7Mt, marking the second lowest harvest in the last 20 years. The Ministry of Agriculture is slightly more optimistic, projecting an average yield of 64q/ha, which is a 13% decrease from 2023 and an 11% decrease from the ten-year average. Factors such as regular rainfall, weed and disease pressure, and reduced radiation have contributed to the decline in production. Other crops like winter and spring barley, durum wheat, protein crops, and rapeseed are also expected to see a decrease in production compared to the previous year. However, European barley production is projected to increase, particularly in Germany, while EU rapeseed production is expected to decrease, with Spain being the only country experiencing an increase.
