The Food Safety Authority in Egypt has issued instructions to customs outlets, allowing imports of milk and dairy products without halal certificates to enter the country until February 28, 2023, excluding raw milk. However, food industry companies are still required to obtain halal certificates if the importing countries demand it. This comes as Egypt's imports of Irish dairy products saw a significant increase in 2020, making Ireland the largest supplier of cheddar cheese to Egypt. The Egyptian General Organization for Standardization and Quality has established a unit to oversee the halal food industry, and a 2012 ministerial resolution granted the organization the authority to license the marking of halal on goods and products.
