British potato growers are undershooting the economic impact of their sector, according to Steven Thomson, a senior agricultural economist at SACAP. The sector could potentially contribute £4.5 billion to the economy, instead of the commonly held view of £765 million. Thomson emphasized the importance of considering the entire supply chain and the downstream economic benefits, which are significant with potatoes. Households and the hospitality industry in the UK spend around £4 billion on potatoes annually, with about 70% being sourced domestically.
