From January to August 2021, Chile's vegetable exports reached USD 346 million FOB, a 1% increase from the previous year, with tomatoes and garlic being the top earners. Export formats included vegetable seeds and tomato paste, with Japan and the Netherlands as the main destinations. Fresh vegetable exports also saw a 4.1% increase, predominantly garlic. On the other hand, vegetable imports rose by 8.8% to USD 155 million CIF, with a focus on vegetable seeds and frozen vegetables. The national vegetable production area for the 2020/21 season was approximately 92,720 hectares, with a 5-year growth rate of 4.2%, and a notable increase in the surface area dedicated to chicory for industrial use. The Metropolitan Region continues to lead in horticultural production, followed by the O'Higgins and Maule regions.
