The European Commission has granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status to Olive oil from the Croatian island of Brač. The oil is produced mechanically from the Oblica olive variety, which must constitute a minimum of 80% of the oil. It is known for its low acidity, high polyphenol content, and distinctive flavor. The island has a long history of olive cultivation, dating back to the 16th century, and has modernized its production techniques, leading to international recognition. Brač is the sixth extra virgin olive oil from Croatia to receive PDO status, joining the ranks of Cres, Istria, Korcula, Krk, and Solta, making a total of 33 agricultural and food products in Croatia with PDO or Protected Geographical Indication status.
