The Egyptian Customs Authority has issued instructions for increased scrutiny of agricultural products being exported, particularly from Safaga and Nuweiba ports, due to concerns over smuggling of Captagon pills hidden in fruit and vegetable shipments. These instructions aim to ensure the accuracy and quality of exported agricultural products, following a notable increase in exports of various crops in the first half of 2024. This period saw an 11% increase in fresh agricultural crop exports, totaling 7.81 million tons, with significant growth in citrus fruit, grape, and bean exports, and a decline in onion and garlic exports. Mango exports experienced a substantial 38% increase, while pomegranate exports saw a 7% decrease. These 12 crops account for approximately 60% of Egypt's total agricultural exports.
