A new project, TRUE-FISH, funded by the European Union, aims to revitalize the fishery and aquaculture production systems in Lake Victoria, located in the East African Community (EAC) region. The initiative will focus on enhancing commercial fish-farming networks, providing training in aquaculture, and promoting sustainability and biosecurity. It will be implemented in partnership with the Lake Victoria Fishing Organization and WorldFish. The project seeks to combat declines in commercial fish stocks due to overfishing, invasive species, pollution, and climate change, and to meet the growing demand for seafood in East Africa.
