Gardeners in southern Moldova have started harvesting and selling home-grown peach fig (flat) varieties, leading to a decrease in prices from the high prices previously charged for imported products. The presence of flat peaches on the market has led to an increase in average and maximum prices for peaches in general, but has also reduced sales of regular peach varieties and led to price polarization. Small producers of fig peaches prefer to sell them at a high price in urban markets themselves, rather than through intermediary resellers. However, the growth of the fig peach production segment in Moldova to an export level is hampered by the fact that it has not yet been included in the state register of recommended varieties, meaning the establishment of fig peach orchards is not subsidized.
