Tuna production in Vietnam has seen a decline due to reduced output and cheap prices, with tuna fishing boats bringing in significantly less catch in recent years. The cost of fishing and raw materials has risen, while tuna prices have remained stagnant. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers reports a growth in tuna exports in the US and Western markets, with an export value of over 759 million USD in 2021. However, the industry faces challenges such as overfishing, advancements in fishing vessels, and the need for advancements in the value chain. Traditional fishing methods in Phu Yen and Nghe An provinces result in lower quality products and cheap prices. Both provinces are looking to collaborate with Japanese enterprises to improve quality and establish tuna auctions.
