The European Union (EU) has seen a significant decrease in potato production, with the majority of production concentrated in five countries: Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. This decline, which has seen the potato cultivation area reduced by half since the turn of the millennium, is attributed to climate change, the withdrawal of plant protection substances in the EU, and a decrease in consumer interest due to the potato's high carbohydrate content and lack of vitamins and minerals. Domestic consumption and production levels are at their lowest, with the harvest often running out by winter due to low yields and inadequate storage.
