In May 2021, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Spain fell by 0.16% compared to April, but rose by 0.28% over the past five months and 0.54% year-on-year, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The decrease in May was primarily due to lower prices in the 'Diverse Goods and Services' and 'Education' categories, with carrots, interdepartmental transport, disposable diapers, mobile phones, and toilet paper experiencing the most significant drops. In contrast, plantains, grapes, green beans, eggs, locoto, and cheeses became more affordable, partially offsetting the overall decline. The positive accumulated variation over the period was largely attributed to increases in education, food, communication, health, furniture, housing, and food consumed outside the home.
