Jamaica's onion and potato growers have surpassed their production targets, meeting 40% and 70% of the national demands for these crops respectively. The country's total onion production was 4,000 tons, falling short of the 10,000-ton target, but represents a significant achievement. The potato sector, on the other hand, saw an increase in production from 15,000 to 17,000 tons, comfortably surpassing the 70% target. Agriculture Minister Pearnel Charles praised the stakeholders in the sector and outlined the ministry's efforts to enhance local production and reduce imports, including the distribution of over 24,000 bags of fertilizer and the revision of the cultivation incentive program. This initiative aims to mitigate the effects of increased input costs and supply disruptions caused by the pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.
