A large banana variety, Musa ingens, has been discovered in Papua New Guinea. The plant can grow up to 18m tall with a trunk circumference of 2m and leave lengths of up to 5m. The bananas can weigh between 30 and 60 kg when ripe. Despite their size, the fruits are not edible due to their poor taste and many seeds. However, the plant's large leaves are used for roofing and tents, and it is being studied to develop new banana varieties with better edible and cold-resistant fruits.
