Maharashtra is planning to reduce the area planted under chana (chickpeas) and wheat during the Rabi season by 27% and 20% respectively. This decision is in response to concerns over above-normal temperatures, low reservoir levels, and the potential impact of El Nino on the winter season. Instead, the state plans to increase the area of crops like jowar (sorghum) and maize, which require less water and will also help increase the availability of fodder in rain-fed areas.
