New Zealand is experiencing an onion shortage and higher prices for fruits and vegetables compared to last year, with yellow onions about €0.70 per kg more expensive and red onions even pricier. Lance Roper of Roper & Son Limited, which produces 500 to 800 tonnes of peeled red onions annually, attributes the shortage to adverse weather conditions over the past year. The country has had to import more onions from the United States to make up for the shortfall, with new onion seed expected to arrive in December, but no volume available until mid-January.
