Morocco has set a record for the past five years by importing a total of 60,000 tons of seed potatoes for the 2022/23 season, making it the country's second most imported horticultural commodity after dates. The import period lasts from October to April-May, with the Netherlands being the primary supplier, contributing to over half of the total imports. This surge in imported seed potatoes is attributed to Morocco's ongoing drought, which has negatively affected its potato harvest and prompted local producers to enhance their planting material quality. Consequently, Morocco's potato exports have seen a decline in 2023 due to the drought, but the country continues to increase its potato export volumes over the past few years, reaching nearly 54,000 tons in 2022.
