A group of U.S. senators and representatives from Oregon have urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to increase its purchases of seafood from the West Coast, following a successful 2022 pilot that saw the USDA spend USD 52 million on Pacific Coast seafood. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of the commercial fishing and seafood processing industries to the region's economy and culture. They have recommended that whiting and rockfish fillets, among other products, be included in the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Section 32 program for distribution to food assistance programs. The senators and representatives have expressed gratitude for the USDA's ongoing support for the industry.
