Peruvian squid production surges by 245%, with upgraded regulation and satellite monitoring driving industry recovery.

Data from Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) shows that from January to July 2025 alone, the quantity of giant squid brought ashore reached 441.6 thousand tons, a year-on-year surge of 155.6%. Squid resources had sharply declined in 2024, but in 2025, through strengthened monitoring of foreign fishing vessels, optimized fishing regulations, and the implementation of Supreme Decree No. 014-2024-PRODUCE, the Peruvian government required all foreign fishing vessels to connect to the national satellite system (SISESAT), greatly enhancing monitoring efficiency. Meanwhile, Supreme Decree No. 003-2025-PRODUCE, implemented in March, completed an update to the Giant Squid Fisheries Management Regulations (ROP) after a gap of 15 years, establishing legal operating standards for artisanal fisheries and resource allocation rules, and was seen by the industry as an "institutional milestone."
