Strawberry cultivation in Peru has seen a significant increase, expanding from 2,000 hectares in 2017 to 3,500 hectares by the end of 2021, with expectations to grow further due to its profitability. Exports of the product, primarily to the United States, Canada, and Japan, totaled 14,240 tons from January to September 2022, showing an 8% increase in volume and a slight 1% increase in value despite challenges like falling prices and competition from other countries. The growth in strawberry exports has been a mixed journey, with fluctuations and recovery periods, but a consistent trend of growth is observed since 2018, leading to a record 32,405 tons in 2021. The market faces challenges such as lower production in the United States and Mexico due to weather and pest issues, which could potentially favor Peruvian strawberry shipments in the later part of the year.
