Australia is set to harvest a record 20,000 tonnes of olives, resulting in 20,000 tonnes of olive oil, due to favorable seasons and emergence from drought. The industry has seen significant growth over the past 20 years, with over 75% of fruit producing extra virgin quality oil. However, the industry is focusing on consistent production as it is cyclical. The University of New England is measuring a yield increase of up to 300% in the Boort region of Victoria using remote sensing techniques. The Australian Olive Association is evaluating ag-tech products, including remote sensing technologies and imagery, to develop cost-effective, reliable techniques for individual growers to improve pest and disease resilience, labor and water efficiencies, and productivity gains.
