Sonoran shrimp fishermen are facing a potentially devastating season due to conditional export certification from the US and a significant decrease in catch. The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (Conapesca) highlighted the misuse of sea turtle excluder devices, and the season's poor performance has left fishermen storing and freezing shrimp in anticipation of a decision from the US by October 1. Although the United States is the best market for Mexican shrimp, especially for large sizes, the industry has struggled to maintain its 70% export rate, with the US and Canada being the primary destinations. The industry has also explored potential markets in European countries, but challenges with head shrimp and lower prices compared to the US present obstacles.
