The Spanish fishing fleet will be allowed to catch an additional 4,122 tons of southern hake this year, a 84% increase from the initial allocation, following an agreement at the EU Council of Ministers. This decision, welcomed by the Spanish government, is based on scientific reports that indicate the availability of sufficient stock. The quota increase will benefit 1,200 Spanish fishing vessels and reverses a trend of decreasing total allowable catches. The EU Council of Ministers is also set to discuss agricultural issues, including the impact of the war in Ukraine on international markets and the extension of the agreement for grain export from Ukraine. Additionally, Spain plans to advocate for easier access for farmers to fertilizer products at the upcoming November council.
