In February, Egypt witnessed a significant reduction in its marine product imports, with shrimp imports decreasing by 67.3% to $6.810 million and prepared or preserved tuna imports dropping by 53.4% to $10.909 million, compared to the same month in 2022. Despite these import declines, Egypt remains a leading country in fish farming in Africa and sixth globally. The country's total annual fish production is approximately 2 million tons, with an 85% self-sufficiency rate. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has directed the government to devise a strategic plan for fisheries and lake development to achieve self-sufficiency in fish and surplus for export, leveraging ongoing fisheries projects. The Minister of Agriculture has emphasized the need for a comprehensive database to support decision-making, control fishing numbers, enforce laws against poaching, and meet European Union export requirements.
