In 2020, Belgium saw a decrease in strawberry cultivation areas by 2.1%, largely due to a reduction in outdoor cultivation, while covered cultivation rose by 12%. The trend of shifting to covered strawberry cultivation in greenhouses is expected to persist in 2021. There was a notable decrease in the area for lettuce cultivation, but an increase in alternative lettuce varieties and lamb's lettuce. The area for tomato crops might have seen a decline for the first time in years in Flanders due to the Tomato brown rugose fruit virus. Overall, the area for greenhouse cultivation of fruits and vegetables in Belgium increased by 175 hectares.
