The Official Journal of the European Union has announced the addition of the Nueces de Nerpio walnuts as a new Spanish quality product, earning a spot in the DOP and PGI register. Grown in the Taibilla valley basin in the southern Sierra de Segura using agroforestry techniques since the 19th century, these walnuts are now protected under the European Union's designation of protected designation of origin (PDO). The application for this recognition was submitted by the Association for the Promotion of the Nerpio Nut in 2020, representing over a hundred producer-farming partners who have cultivated these walnuts, making it a supraautonomous Denomination of Origin. The association has marketed over 110,000 kilograms of shelled walnuts and nearly 7,000 kilograms of peeled walnuts in the past four campaigns.
