Spain: The DOP Nueces de Nerpio already has recognition in the EU

Yesterday, the Official Journal of the European Union has published that a new figure of Spanish quality has been included in the DOP and PGI register. It is the Protected Designation of Origin, Nueces de Nerpio. The 'Nueces de Nerpio' are walnuts obtained from walnuts of the native variety of Nerpio, grown in the Taibilla valley basin, in the southern area of the Sierra de Segura. In this medium-high mountain environment, of dolomitic limestone rocks, the environment is typically agroforestry, in which the native fruit of Nerpio has found its natural ecological niche, perfectly adapted after the successive selections made by Nerpio farmers since the 19th century. XVI. The DOP has been achieved thanks to the commitment of the walnut producers, from Nerpio, Yeste and Letur, in the province of Albacete, and also from Moratalla, in the province of Murcia.
