Due to the lack of sunflower oil imports from Ukraine, caused by the Russian invasion, Spain's food industry is considering reincorporating palm oil, despite its health concerns and environmental impact, especially deforestation. Palm oil is preferred for its technological advantages, such as stability, lack of taste and smell, and low cost. However, concerns about sustainability persist, with all EU palm oil now being certified sustainable. The availability and price of palm oil may be affected by export restrictions in its producing countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, which could lead to a global vegetable oil market crisis.
