Starting today, Chile will begin the trial run to implement the exchange of Electronic Phytosanitary Certificates between Chile and Japan, through the Paperless ePhyto modality. This step represents a significant advance for horticultural, forestry, and propagation material exports, by allowing more agile, secure, and traceable processes in one of the world's most demanding markets. During this initial stage, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) will continue to issue paper certificates, but will also conduct electronic test transmissions that will allow for the evaluation of the system's security and proper functioning. These tests aim to validate the transition to a fully digital operation. The official implementation of the electronic exchange without the use of physical documents is scheduled for March 2026, at which point both countries expect to fully adopt the Paperless ePhyto scheme.
