An attempt at the illegal transportation and importation of sheep from Greece was thwarted by inspectors from the Regional Food Safety Directorate in Kardzhali and border police, reports the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). The importation of live animals from Greece is absolutely prohibited due to the presence of the dangerous diseases foot-and-mouth disease and sheep pox in small ruminants, the Agency reminds. Inspectors discovered five sheep during a routine check on the Makazza-Nimfeya road in a minibus with Bulgarian registration. They were without the mandatory ear tags and without accompanying veterinary documents certifying their origin and health status.
