The Peruvian government is banning the entry of pig products into the country to prevent the spread of African swine fever, a highly contagious disease affecting pigs. This measure is part of efforts to protect the country's swine industry from economic losses. The National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) will enforce these restrictions at airports, seaports, and border control posts. Additionally, Senasa is reinforcing control measures and running information campaigns to raise awareness about the disease. The importation of live pigs and their products was already banned in 2019, and efforts are being made to properly dispose of waste from international transport to prevent disease introduction. Despite the ban on pig products, pork consumption is not considered a risk to humans.
