The Pedro and Elena Hernández Foundation, in partnership with other organizations, has been working to save Mexican vanilla in Northern Veracruz since 2016. This initiative has led to the establishment of 163 family vanilla orchards, with 40 of these now mature enough to produce gourmet vanilla, yielding an average of 250 kg per year. The foundation is empowering producers to add value to their product by controlling more links in the production chain. In 2021, the Tlixochilt Otontepec Rural Production Society was formed for legal and commercial representation of vanilla from the Sierra de Otontepec. The foundation is also working with Fomento Social Citibanamex to strengthen the vanilla value chain and support producer families in marginalized communities.
