The Italian table tomato market is witnessing growth in both production and consumption, with long-term trends increasing at rates of 9.5% for production and 12.9% for consumption over the past decade. Despite rising prices, sales are increasing in large-scale distribution chains. The market includes over 30 product references, with a wide range of selling prices. Production is predominantly in open fields, with Sicily being the leading region, and costs are higher for greenhouse production due to energy and labor expenses. From the second half of 2021, costs of mean production have seen significant increases, especially in fertilizers, fuels, and electricity. Between 2017 and 2021, Italian table tomato imports fluctuated, with expenditure peaking in 2019 at 148 million euros, and the average annual price of imported product ranging between 0.95 and 1.13 euros per kilogram.
