The obligation (in these libertarian times) for breeders to attach an electronic caravan -which costs no less than $1.70- to each calf born from 2026 onwards is raising a stir just days before it comes into effect. So much so that more than 600 producers have requested that its use should not be mandatory but "voluntary." The loud outcry has already reached the Secretary of Agriculture, Sergio Iraeta, who is yet to respond to this proposal. The first to raise the issue were the farmers from Bases Federadas, who circulated a petition that has already gathered 600 signatures from producers in 17 provinces. They simply demanded that "the electronic caravan should be voluntary," at least for the first segment of the cattle chain. And in recent hours, they warned, in a statement, that if a political solution to this proposal is not reached, they could turn to the courts, filing a writ of amparo.
