The Uruguayan government, through the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA), took a historic step by making the first shipment of seeds, with genetics selected for conservation, to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. The island of Svalbard, where the largest vault in the world is located, belongs to the Norwegian government, and is located in the Arctic Ocean.
