In the first eight months of 2020, Egypt emerged as the seventh largest importer of Vietnamese tuna, contributing 2.4% to the total export value. The tuna exports to Egypt saw a significant increase of nearly 65% compared to the same period in 2019, amounting to over 10 million USD. The exports primarily consisted of processed and canned tuna products, with canned tuna making up over 95% and mainly being skipjack and bigeye tuna in oil or salt. Only five Vietnamese enterprises, including Tuna Vietnam and FOODTECH JSC, are currently participating in this market. This trend is particularly notable as Egypt has been reducing its tuna imports from Thailand and Indonesia while increasing them from Vietnam, offering a promising opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to expand their presence in the Egyptian market.
