W4: Weekly Nut Update

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W4 in the global nut landscape including cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, and pine nut. In summary, in Nigeria, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development reported the revenue of cashew nuts in 2022 was USD 250M, from 250K metric tons of cashew nuts produced annually, only 10% are processed locally. In Düzce, Turkey exported 16.33K tons of hazelnut to European Union countries in 2022. On the other hand, the Ugandan government through the National Agricultural Advisory Services has unveiled a cost sharing intervention for farmers dealing with macadamia nuts. The initiative is aimed at boosting the production of these products. Lastly, during 2022, the regions of Siberia, Russia supplied 9.5K tons of pine nuts to foreign buyers.

Cashew

Nigeria: Nigeria Earns USD 250M From Cashew Nuts Exportation in 2022 (Jan 24)

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nigeria revealed the revenue of cashew nuts in 2022 was USD 250M. The minister reported that of 250K metric tons of cashew nuts produced annually, only 10% are processed locally. The permanent Secretary of the Ministry mentioned that in 2022 exported cashews from Nigeria generated over USD 250M, accounting for around 10% of the country's agricultural export. 

Hazelnut

Turkey: 16.33K Tons of Hazelnut Kernels Were Exported From Düzce to EU Countries in 2022 (Jan 28)

In Düzce, Turkey exported 16.33K tons of hazelnut to European Union countries in 2022. The Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry stated that Düzce has an important place in hazelnut production and export throughout the country, and processed hazelnuts constitute the majority of the city's 12-month exports.

Macadamia

Uganda: Cost Sharing Intervention Between National Agricultural Advisory Services and Farmers in Uganda (Jan 23)

The Ugandan government through the National Agricultural Advisory Services has unveiled a cost sharing intervention for farmers mostly dealing in avocados and macadamia nuts. The initiative is aimed at boosting the production of these products considered as high value crops in the country. Avocado and macadamia production and exports in Uganda are still low and have significant potential to grow. In 2021, Uganda's avocado exports was USD 5.06M while macadamia was USD 6.17K, which is far below neighboring countries in the region such as Kenya and Tanzania.

Pine nut

Russia: China Is the Main Buyer of Pine Nuts From Siberia (Jan 23)

In 2022, the regions of Siberia supplied 9.5K tons of pine nuts to foreign buyers. According to customs officials, concerning 2021, deliveries increased by 2.3 times in weight. In monetary terms, revenues from the export of valuable wild plants increased by 46%. As in previous years, China is the main importer of pine nuts, accounting for 81% of purchases.
