Heavy Rains and Low Production Spark USD 200 Million Loss for Peruvian Mangos

The Peruvian fresh mango industry faces significant challenges, with Piura, responsible for 62% of national production, experiencing an 80% loss in mango flowering due to heavy rains. This has resulted in estimated economic losses exceeding USD 200 million, notably affecting the Kent variety and its exports. The General Manager of Dominus and President of Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM) highlighted the adverse effects of temperature and weather conditions in the San Lorenzo Valley on productivity.

The situation is reflected in a reduced forecast of the mango export volume to the United States (US), with a 37.75% decrease. Importantly, the market anticipates rising mango prices due to the historically poor harvest, leaving international traders wondering about European consumer reactions and the market's trajectory in 2024. Shipments of fresh mango from the current campaign have seen a 67% YoY decline, totaling 4.8 thousand metric tons (mt), 42% less YoY. Late campaign initiation, climate changes, and a 30% decrease in fruit crops in the Áncash region contribute to this decline. The market outlook for Peruvian fresh mango raises concerns about future investments and the potential for another structurally poor harvest in 2025.

Resilient Growth in Brazilian Mango Exports in 2023 Due to Bahia's Success Despite Regional Challenges

Brazilian mango exports are poised for a strong finish in 2023, with Bahia driving growth. The mango production is 19% higher than in 2022, contributing to a 36% increase in revenue until Oct-23, marking the highest in history. However, the São Francisco Valley's fruit production is not expected to exceed the 2021 record due to adverse weather conditions. This positive trend is reinforced by limited mango production in competing South American countries like Ecuador and Peru. Despite challenges, Brazil's mango industry anticipates a successful year-end, benefiting from increased international shipments and robust financial performance.

Italy Surge in Popularity for Mango, Driven by Changing Habits and Climate Advantages

The Italian tropical fruit market witnessed a rise in mango consumption, with a 20% family penetration rate. Climate change encourages planting tropical varieties in Southern Italy. Cumulative data for January to May-23 indicates a 4% YoY increase. Despite limited national production, estimated at 1 to 2 million kg, it continues to grow. The success of these tropical fruits in Italy reflects changing consumer preferences and increased investments in response to favorable climate conditions.

Drought Crisis Hits Málaga's Fresh Mango Industry and Causes a 30% Loss

The Fresh Mango industry in Málaga, Spain, faces severe challenges with a 30% loss in mango trees due to two consecutive years of drought. The harvest yielded only 8 million metric tons (mmt) of mangoes, an 80% decrease from previous years. Urgent measures and resources are needed in the Axarquía region to preserve the 3 thousand hectares (ha) of mangoes.

Egypt Dominates EU Mango and Guava Market with Record 2023 Supplies, and Spain Leads Import Trends

Egypt anticipates a breakthrough in the European Union (EU) fresh mango and guava market in 2023. Import data for the first nine months reveals a significant YoY increase in supply. From 2018, Egyptian mango and guava supplies to the EU tripled, reaching almost 1.5 thousand mt by Sep-23, a record high compared to slightly over 1.3 thousand mt in 2022. Spain leads the imports of Egyptian mangoes and guavas in 2023, showcasing a promising year for Egyptian exporters in the EU market.
