Pig farmers in the UK managed to decrease their soy needs to its half during the last decade, dropping from representing an average 20% of the feed to 10% in the total composition. Soy is presently the cheapest ingredient with the highest amino-acid and protein level and it is fairly difficult to replace. 90% of the total imported amount of soy to the European Union is used as feed for animals. However the increased consumption of soy results more and more rain forest clearings for new soy farms in the Amazonian rain forest. The Amazon Soy Moratorium (ASM) is attempting to stop this tendency.
