Ukrainian Wheat Exports Through Solidarity Lanes Hurt Romanian and Bulgarian Producers

Ukrainian wheat, which arrives in EU markets through the solidarity lanes, is creating economic problems for producers in Romania and Bulgaria. Wheat from Ukraine that is originally destined for countries most in need, such as the Middle East or North Africa, ends up stopping in transit countries and traded in European markets, causing a collapse in European wheat prices. Romanian and Bulgarian grain producers are strongly protesting this practice as they have suffered a sharp deterioration in their competitiveness in European markets. The main problem is that Romanian and Bulgarian products such as sunflower, wheat, barley and corn now receive lower prices due to the entry of Ukrainian foods, which are subject to different rules than the more restrictive ones required by the EU.
