World hazelnut production has grown by 35% since 2000 up until 2022. Unfortunately, the anomalous weather trend, and the damage from the bedbugs have dramatically affected the Hazelnut production in Turkey and Italy, the main supplier of hazelnut, from 2019 to 2021.
Since 2018, Italian agro-industry has planned to provide an increase of 20,000 hectares of new hazelnut plantations in Southern Italy. However, in 2021 it was challenging for Italian growers with reduction of in-shell production down by almost 40%, while Turkey production increased by 9.2%.
Nevertheless, the crop for 2022/2023 will improve. Winter has been adequately cold. Flowering has started at different altitudes where a formidable presence of male flowers promises great pollination. All indicators are optimal yet to make more accurate predictions, temperature in April will be crucial to understand the amount of production Italian growers can expect in 2022.
